The 2007 vintage: “Very balanced”
Saint-Emilions, Pomerols and Fronsacs
Fruit, freshness and fineness After a rather dry 2007, with major differences in temperatures between May and August, and an exceptionally hot month of April, the months of September and October were rather beneficial for the 2007 vintage of St-Emilion, Pomerol and Fronsac wines. Temperatures recorded in April were 3.5° C higher than the average of the last thirty years according to professionals. September and October were the “sunniest in the last 60 years”.
These weather conditions explain why harvests were held between 15 September and 20 October and why producers had to “double their efforts in the vineyards”. Ultimately, their “know-how” made it possible to take advantage of the grapes’ potential “in the best possible way”. The 2007 Merlot wines thus offer “acidity that reveals a good balance for wines to come”, an “impressive” colour, “superb aromatic complexity” and finally, very “fine, round and supple” tannins. However, the poor weather conditions led to smaller harvests at a national level: the 2007 harvests should show a decrease in yield of 12% compared to 2006.
